I didn't think I would be able to share this design I did, because the squares I used was the left over grannies I did from the Ring toss afghan, which is not my pattern. Then it dawned on me, I could still show you how I did it because you can use any size 6 inch square that you like. How about this pretty new granny I designed?

So to begin, find a pattern of a 6 inch square you like and make 16 of them.
This is how you will connect them:
the = symbol shows where I did the sewing connections. I sewn them as show in the picture above until I had all 12 connected, be sure when you sew them that the two front sides are facing one another so that the seam does not show through.
Once done I fold the piece down the center, giving me 6 on front and 6 squares on the back.
Then I attach the last 4 pieces as show above, and then fold in half as well, and sew them to the back.
To do the trim around the neck, I did one row of single crochets, then I did the crab stitch all the way around. But as you can see by the picture at the top of the page where my daughter is wearing it. It's a bit big and I later had to add a piece to try and fix it. So If your an advanced crocheter, then I recommend to try to do some decreases at the top and maybe a few more rows of single crochets to better close the gap before you start your crab stitches.
For the bottom border of the poncho, I did a round of single crochets all around the bottom, then I did a row of shells. If you don't know how to do the shell stitch I have a helpful video here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfaikv0KvX0
