For this Crocheted Ruffle Skirt project you will need a

HOOK: 5mm hook/ US H hook

YARN: 4 skeins of worsted weight yarn 4 ply US, 10 ply AU if your making child size. Get much more for adult size. Most yarn is used up on the bottom part of the skirt. I used 3 skeins of the variegated purple and one skein of the white. You will also need an elastic band to sew in the skirt for the waist and you will need a tape measure.

It is important to note, because everyone crochets at different tightness. So it would do no good to go by the same chains as I did. Best to chain for yourself a number divisible by 3 plus 1 (the plus one is because you have to chain one in order to work in the 2nd chain from the hook, you will loose this plus 1 stitch immediately) I chained 78 plus 1, but I am almost sure if I chained again 78 it would be to big or to small, not even you will chain the exact same every time.

So this is where the tape measure comes in. Make your chain and measure it on the person your making it for around the hips, make sure it’s not to tight where they can’t move around when wearing it, need to be comfortably loose. (make sure your final number is divisible by 3 plus 1) Make sure your measuring the largest part of the hips, not the waist, we will be doing the waist part last.
Once you have your chain measured about the size you need, keep in mind once you start to sc your chain will shorten slightly.

The gauge for this pattern for the clusters is 6 sts = 4 cms or 1 ½ inches.

Once you have the right gauge for the clusters, the bottom ruffle part of the skirt should be fine, it’s very forgiving.

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sts = stitches
sl st = slip stitch
sk a st = skip a stitch
dc = double crochet

To start:
sl st to connect to first ch to form a ring, make sure the chain is not twisted.

Now using the top of the chain only, sc in all sts around.

Round 1
We start our cluster stitch as follows:
Here is a beginner video if you need it

Clusters are worked in 3 stitches total.

Step 1: YO, go in through first stitch and draw up a loop, YO, pull through two loops only!
Step 2 :YO, go in through same stitch and draw up a loop, YO and pull through two loops only
(see picture below)

Ruffle Skirt 13 -1

Steps 3 & 4: YO go in through next stitch and repeat steps one and two, 5 loops on hook (see picture below)

Ruffle Skirt 14 -1

Steps 5 & 6: Now using our third and final stitch, repeat steps one and two again giving you 7 loops on your hook. Now pull through all loops. And chain 2 (see picture below)

Ruffle Skirt 15 -1

Repeat this for the whole round without skipping a stitch. If you come to the end and have less that 3 sts left then only do cluster using 2 or 1 sts. It will right itself next round. Then chain one (always only chain one on last cluster of row) and slip stitch into top of cluster. If your not sure which one I mean, look above at the picture above, the two middle sts are done on top of the cluster, this is the place where you will be slip stitching into at the end of your round.

Round 2
Now you want to work your second row of clusters the same, but instead of single crochets, you’ll be working in the stitches above the clusters. Below shows you where you will place your stitches. (see picture below)

Ruffle Skirt SC here and here -1

I made mine for my 5 year old so the she is much shorter than a full grown woman of course! So do as many rows as it takes to cover the hips and the start of the legs. I did a total for 10 rows for my daughter.
Once you have the top part the desired size, then your ready to start the ruffle part of the skirt. As you can see in this pictures, I changed colors to white every 5th row of skirt. Rest of the time I used a variegated yarn.

BOTTOM OF SKIRT

Round 1
Here is a beginner video if you need it

Your first row of ruffles goes as follows:

Double crochet using the back loop only into the next three stitches. (see picture below)

 Ruffle Skirt 22 -1 remark

Then using the front loops of the three double crochets you just made, work one dc in each front stitch, starting with the front of the first dc that you did. (see pictures below)

Ruffle Skirt 23

Then repeat for whole round.

Rounds 2 through 9: again I changed to white every 5th row

Second row of ruffles is done the same as the first row, exception is that you skip 2 stitches before starting the next set of crossed dc’s. (See picture below)

Ruffle Skirt 25

So repeat Round two for the bottom of the skirt, for a total of 8 rows.

Round 10 – (Change to white or border color)
Repeat round 1 – do not skip a stitch. This will give you maximum ruffles at edge.
