Hello and welcome to my page. The Thick Mesh Crochet Stitch was one of the first stitches I discovered and it’s still one of my favorites. It looks amazing in variegated yarn! It also has two different looks to it, depending on which way you crochet with it, in the round or in rows.
Crocheting this stitch in the round has two different textures on each side. You can choose which stitch look you want! Hard to believe it’s been many years since first discovering this stitch and I am going to redo the video tutorials for this one day!

For this project you will need:
HOOK: Any size but I used 5 mm hook or size H hook for the US
YARN: Any size but I used worsted weight yarn, 4 ply US, 10 ply AU
Each Skein was – 100 grams / 3.5. oz or 240 meters / 262 yards
This is easier to work with in a round but looks the same if you work back and forth, you just have to make sure to keep the sides of your project straight.

STARTING THE MESH
If your working in the round, DC into first st and ch 1, sk a st, dc and ch 1, sk a st (repeat til end of round)
If your working in rows, then you will want to skip the first 4 chains and DC in 5th chain from hook.
Round 2 – Working in the stitches one row below
This row we will still be working on the previous row, but now you’ll be working the stitches in between. The skipped space from row 1.
If your working in the round, DC into the skipped st one row down. As you can see below in the picture, the middle stitch. You dc into the previous row, in between the two dc’s and into the stitch you skipped from the previous row. Then ch 1 and repeat for the whole round.
If your working in a row, turn and DC into the first stitch, which is the top of the previous rows DC, you are creating a side border to make sure your projects stays straight, always DC your very last and very first stitch. Then DC into the skipped st one row down.
If your working in the round, DC into first st and ch 1, sk a st, dc and ch 1, sk a st (repeat til end of round)

As you can see by the picture, the next row is also brought down and worked into the first row stitches
Keep working in the round by putting your first DC to the right of the first DC from last round, then working left as normal. Only this first DC is worked this way. Will keep your rounds even and not as much of a noticeable first stitch.
Then put your DC’s next to the smaller st two rows down as shown in the picture below. If you can not find the stitch, just use your finger to find the two rows. As the picture shows I have two rows on the finger. You want to place your DC to the left of the smaller stitch, where the tip of my finger is. Always to the left of the smaller stitch two rows down. And ch 1 between sts.
Do the same if working in rows, just make sure you DC in your first and last stitch of the row.
Do the same if working in rows, just make sure you DC in your first and last stitch of the row.
If working in a round this stitch looks great on the reverse side! Keep it in mind if your making something that you could possibly turn inside out!
