Crochet Slouch Hat with brim – Moss Stitch Slouch Hat – Free Crochet Pattern

This Crochet Slouch Hat with brim is called the Moss Stitch Slouch Hat aka Crunch Stitch as this stitch is called. When I first started learning how to make this stitch, it was being called the Moss stitch, so sorry if this confuses you! But however you call it, it still looks amazing and talk about easy! I’ve had some people tell me they have had issues with the beginning chain twisting on them so I have a page to show you step by step on how to do this and will leave a link to it below.

MAKING THE RIM

To start:

ch 12

Round 1

sc in second ch from hook and in all sc’s (11)
ch 1 and turn, working in back loops only, sc in all sts
repeat until you have 60 rows
then connect to form a ring by sl stitching to sew the pieces together.

Round 2

We’re going to start working in the side of the stitches now to make edge trim of the hat.

Make sure to put 2 single crochets between each row of ribbing. My thumb below shows the sections that I mean

Once you have 2 single crochets in between each area as indicated above, you should have 60 sts

sl st into beginning sc and ch 1

Round 3

Now we will be doing the Crab stitch (CS) so we will be working in the opposite direction than normal. Working backwards, CS in next stitch to the left if your right handed (and to the right if your left handed) then you want to skip the next stitch and *CS into next 2 stitches, then skip a stitch * continue this and sl st in beginning stitch. Cut yarn leaving a tail and hide it well using a tapestry needle.

Now it’s time to change colors to whatever color you wish to use for your main part of the hat.

MAKING THE HAT PORTION

Round 1

Flip your rim to the other side and attach your color next to the part where your slip stitched your rim closed before. This will be the back of your hat. Sc as your did on the other side of the hat, 2 sc’s in each section, 60 sts total. Sl st in beginning stitch and ch 1. Place a stitch marker here to mark beginning of round.

Round 2

CS using front loops only all the way around (60 sts) sl st in beginning stitch and ch 1.

Round 3

Now sc in all of the back loops you didn’t use from the previous row, as shown in picture below.

Round 4

Ch 1 and in same stitch do a HDC, next stitch do a sl st, repeat til you come up to your marker again (hdc, sl st) sl to into last stitch to join. (60 sts)

Round 5

ch 1 and turn your work and HDC into the first stitch where you last sl stitched, and put a sl stitch in to the stitches where you did you hdc last round. (HDC, sl st) (60 sts)

Now here is where you need to start watching how your stitches are going, if you wish to have your stitches all going diagonal then after every start of your round, do the first 6 stitches starting with HDC, then look at the back to make sure your stitches are not in a perfect line. If they are, then you know you need to back up and start the the round with a slip stitch first. Check again after 6 stitches just to make sure your stitches are diagonal then continue the round. You will need to do this every round to make sure your stitches are staying diagonal.

repeat round 5 until your hat measures 25 cms / 10 inches from rim of hat to last round worked.

REDUCING THE HAT

Round 1 of reducing

Sc into first stitch, then sc dec, then repeat, sc 1, sc dec, when you get to the end of the row, place a marker here.

Rounds 2 and 3

sc into all sts around.

Round 4 of reducing

sc 1, sc decrease

Rounds 5 and 6

sc into all sts around.

After round 6, cut your tail leaving a long tail. Thread your tapestry needle. Weave through the stitches like a draw string, go through all sts and turn your hat inside out. Pull string to tighten hole and sew in knots, even tie a few knots if you like. Hide tail.
