Mesh Tote Bag Crochet Tutorial and Free Crochet Pattern

This Crocheted Mesh Tote bag has a strong bottom but lacy stretchy sides for maximum space. This bag is great for Shopping, beach bag or everyday carrying bag.

Mesh Tote Bag – Free Crochet Pattern

For this project you will need:

HOOK: 6 mm hook or size J hook for the US

YARN: I used worsted weight yarn, 4 ply US, 10 ply AU

Each Skein was – 100 grams / 3.5. oz or 240 meters / 262 yards

  • Stitch marker 

 

 

 

 

ABBREVIATIONS

ch = Chain

SC = Single Crochet

DC = Double Crochet

sk a st = Skip a stitch

sl st = Slip Stitch

FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet

YO = Yarn over

Repeat what’s in between * for rest of round.

Round 1
sc 12 into second ch from hook, working over tail to perform the Chain 2 method like show in this video or you can use the magic loop (12)

 

 

Round 2
ch 1 and sc 2 into each stitch around, sl st in beg st (24)

 

 

 

Round 3
ch 1 and sc in all sts, sl st in beg st(24)

 

 

 

Round 4
ch 1 and sc 2 in one stitch , sc 1 in next, repeat for rest of round, sl st in beg st (36)

ch 1 and sc 2 in one stitch, sc 1 in next two stitches, sl st in beg st

ch 1 and sc 2 into one stitch, sc 1 into the next seven stitches, sl st in beg st

Round 16
ch 1 and sc in all sts around, sl st in beg st
You are done with your single crochet increases now

 

 

Mesh Tote 2

 

 

Round 17
ch 1 and doing a DC decrease without the YO in between (see below)

 

 

Mesh Tote 3

 

go into next stitch, pull up a loop

Mesh Tote 4

 

go into next stitch, pull up a loop

then do a double crochet by pulling through 2 loops,

YO, pull through last 2 loops

 

 

Do this for all sts around, sl st into top of beginning chain two (55 sts) , sl st in beg st

Round 18
ch 2 then * FPDC onto the next post, DC into next stitch. * Repeat for rest of round. (see picture below) sl st into top of beginning chain two.

Round 19
ch 2 and turn your work with back side facing you, FPDC into the next post, DC into next stitch ( make sure you dc into the correct stitch, it’s to the left of the post this round. Repeat for whole round. sl st into top of beginning chain two.

 

 

 

Round 20
ch 2 and FPDC using the ch 2 from the previous round, DC into next stitch, Repeat this pattern. When you get to the end of the round, ignore the ch 2 and sl stitch using the FPDC.

 

 

 

Round 21
ch 2 and FPDC into the next post, DC into next stitch ( make sure you dc into the correct stitch, it’s to the left of the post this round. Repeat for whole round. sl st into top of beginning chain two.

 

 

 

Rounds 22 – 33 (for ten rounds)
Repeat rounds 20 and 21

 

 

 

Round 34
ch 1 turn your work facing the front now. Place stitch marker here. Sc in all sts around. (56 sts)

 

 

 

Rounds 35 – 38
Sc in all sts around. (56 sts)

 

 


 

MAKING THE HANDLE

 

 

 

Round 1
ch 1,* DC into next stitch, ch 1, sk a st,* repeat 5 more times. Ch 1 and turn your work (6 sts)

 

 

 

Round 2
ch 1, * DC into the skipped stitches one row down. Ch 1, sk a st * and repeat.
Note: for this row only DC into same space as last DC, then chain 1 and turn.

(we are doing the Thick Mesh Stitch if you have ever done it) here’s a video to help

 

 

 

Round 3
Working in the spaces two rows down as shown below, continue your dc, ch 1

 

 

FP DC Slouch Hat 7

 

 

Repeat the last two rounds until you have 90 rounds of the strap done.

Then in last row SC instead of DC into the skipped stitches below to even out edge.

SC your strap to your bag by laying it up against the side of the top of the bag, even to line up evenly in the middle where the other strap is on the other side.

 

 

 

 

 

Fold top of strap as shown below

Then as you can see the sewing lines below, trying to not go through the top where it shows, sew through the first section of three straps, then sew the two middle pieces together, then repeat the other side

This gives you more padding to carry heavy things.
