MAKING THE RIM
To start:
ch 70 and sl st into beginning ch to form a ring.
Round 1
sc in next stitch from where you sl stitched, and in all stitches around (69 sts)
Rounds 2 & 3
(place marker at beginning stitch) sc in the next 7 sts, then sc decrease. repeat for the next two rounds, you should stop decreasing when you have 56 sts.
Rounds 4 & 5
sc in all sts (56 sts)
when you get to the end of round 5, then sl st into beginning st and ch 1
Round 6
crab stitch / reverse single crochet in all sts around.
NOTE: Skipping a stitch after every 5th crab stitch will help keep rim tighter and prevent the stretched look. But you don’t have to, just a suggestion encase your hat is getting to big at the rim.
After the last st of the round, Sl st into beginning st and ch 1, cut yarn, leaving a tail long enough to be worked in with a tapestry needle.
Round 7
Now working on the other side of the rim, where we first did our ch.
sc your color on, doesn’t matter where on the round, just make sure you are going through the top loops only, and sc in all sts around. When you get to the last two stitches at the end of the row, do a sc dec to reduce your sts to 69.
HOW TO DO THE ANGEL STITCH
Insert your hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop. Do this three times. Four loops on hook. YO and pull through all 4 loops. Chain to secure. Now use this new space (made when you chained) and do 3 sc’s.
Round 2 of Angel Stitch
Place a marker to mark the first st of the round. Then continue in one continuous round. To work the AS’s on the second row, you will be skipping a st and working in the next two sc’s on top of the AS from the previous row. Then using the large stitch in between the AS’s to complete the 4 loops you need. As shown in the picture below.
Below shows you the stitches you use when finishing the first round of AS’s, then continue as normal.
Repeat Round 2 until your hat reaches 25 cms or 10 inches.
Keep in mind your rows are counted diagonally. Note the stitch marker above and then where I stopped my round. You should have equal number of rows in each row around.
TIME TO REDUCE
Rounds 1 & 2 of reducing
Sc using the same stitches you were using to make the angel stitch (still skipping that one sc and sc into the next two, then in the space between angel stitches)
Round 3 of reducing
Sc into first stitch, then sc dec, then repeat, sc 1, sc dec, when you get to the end of the row, place a marker here.
Rounds 4 & 5 of reducing
sc into all sts around.
Round 6 of reducing
Sc into first stitch, then sc dec, then repeat, sc 1, sc dec, when you get to the end of the row, place a marker here.
After round 6, cut your tail leaving a long tail. Thread your tapestry needle. Weave through the stitches like a draw string, go through all sts and turn your hat inside out. Pull string to tighten hole and sew in knots, even tie a few knots if you like. Hide tail.
