Riptide Butterfly Shawl Crochet Free Pattern and Crochet Tutorial

With many Butterfly Shawl Crochet patterns of lacy design have been made, I decided to turn to my attention to colder weather and decided to go with a warmer stitch with lots of texture! I originally thought this would be a shawl we’d share, but using thicker stitches really shrunk this shawl’s design, unlike the more lacy shawls I’ve done so far. It fits her perfectly!

This was the full 1000 meter yarn cake. I can tell already that if I make a bigger version of this design that it would be more of a wrap than a shawl before my yarn cake ran out. Feel free to just keep going with the design if you’re working with more yarn, or stop the repeat short to make a shorter butterfly shawl.

IMPORTANT – Place markers on the DC 2 centers.

Row 1

ch 3 and DC 8 in 3rd ch from the hook. Ch 2 and turn

Row 2

Ch 2 counts as first DC. Dc in 1st st and DC 2 in all sts. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 3

FPDC on 1st DC of row * sk a st, DC 2, ch 1, DC 2 in next st. sk a st. FP on next DC * repeat for row. Skip the ch 2 on the end. CH 1 and turn.

Row 4

*BPDC on BPDC from last row. DC 2 in between the post’s of the next 2 sts, not in the st itself. Then DC 2, ch 1, DC 2 in middle space. Then again put 2 DC’s in between the next DC’s * repeat for row. CH 1 and turn.

Row 5

*FPDC on FPDC | skip next 2 DC’s and DC 2, Ch 1, DC 2 in next space| repeat 2 more times * ch 1 and turn

Row 6

(ch 2 counts as 1st DC) DC 3 in 1st DC. *|DC 1, ch 3, DC 1 in next V st| repeat 2 more times. DC 4 in BPDC * ch 2 and turn

Row 7

The numbers in the () change every row by 1 as you continue your shawl

(ch 2 counts as 1st DC) DC on 2nd DC of row. * DC 2 in middle space between DC’s. DC on the next (2) DC’s. FPDC on 1st DC of your V st. | DC 3, ch 1 DC 3 in the ch 3 sp of your V st.

Now we’re doing our first DC dec. You will YO and grab up the next post of your V st and pull through only 2 of the loops leaving the last one on your hook. YO and grab up the 1st post of the next V stitch and YO and pull through 2 loops. Then YO and pull through all 3 loops.| repeat this one more time for the next V stitch.

After you finish your final V st area with your DC 3, ch 1, DC 3, you will FPDC onto the final post of your last V st. Dc 1 in the next (2) DC’s * repeat for the row. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 8

The numbers in the () change every row by 1 as you continue your shawl

*FPDC on the next (3) DC’s, DC 2 in middle space, FPDC on next (3) DC’s. Then V st in all your ch spaces (dc 1, ch 3, DC 1) * repeat. Ch 2 and turn.

Repeat rows 7 & 8. You’ll just be adding 1 more DC in between your increases each row, but the basic pattern stays the same.
