This is the caret crochet beanie, so named because of the caret symbol that flows through out the hat and just screams texture!
It’s a crochet hat that looks great on both men and women, but given the way the stitch is created, it makes it a certain size so this hat is made for adult’s, though I bet a toddler could wear this easily if you just left off a few rows and made it shorter before starting the rim. I used to do this with a lot of hats that I would make for my kids when they were toddlers.
This hat uses two colors, but it’s optional. I thought it would look better changing colors when you change the texture to help the texture really pop out.

The Pattern
When choosing my colors I made sure they looked good side by side and that one color was a lighter shade than the other. I would use the lighter color to make the top portion of the hat and use the darker color for the rim of the hat.
So grab your lighter color and your hook and let’s get started.
When creating your loop, I recommend leaving a bit of extra tail to crochet over when you begin your first row. This will allow you to pull on the tail to tighten the hole to prevent the top hole from being to big.
Round 1
Ch 3. In the 3rd chain from the hook put a DC, be sure to crochet over your tail here. DC 10 more times into that same chain space. You should have 11 DC’s and the beginning ch 2 for a total of 12 stitches. Sl st in beg ch 2 to end the round. Pull on the tail that you crocheted over to tighten the hole.
Round 2
Ch 2 and DC in the same stitch. * DC 2 in the next stitch * repeat this for the round. (24 sts) sl st in beg ch 2 to end the round.
Round 3
ch 1 and FPDC onto the ch 2 (the ch 2 from the previous row that we used as our step up for the new row.)
*DC 2 into next st, FPDC onto next post * repeat this for the round. sl st in beg FPDC to end the round. (36 sts)
Round 4
ch 1 and * FPDC on the FPDC. (Note: You will always FPDC on the first FPDC every round)
DC on next DC. DC 2 into the SPACE between the 2 DC’s, then DC on next DC. FPDC on next FPDC. * repeat this for the round. (60 sts) sl st in beg FPDC to end the round.
Round 5
ch 1 and FPDC on the FPDC. * Sk next DC and FPDC on the following DC. Then in the SPACE between the next 2 DC’s you want to crochet DC, ch 1, DC to V stitch in the space. Then FPDC on the next post. Then sk the next DC * repeat this for the round. (60 sts) sl st in beg FPDC to end the round.
Round 6
ch 1 and * FPDC on the FPDC. Sk next FPDC, DC on next DC. V stitch in the ch 1 sp of the V stitch. DC on next DC, sk next FPDC. * repeat this for the round. (60 sts) sl st in beg FPDC to end the round.
Round 7
ch 1 and * FPDC on the FPDC. Sk next DC and FPDC on the 1st post of the V stitch. Then V stitch in ch 1 space.(DC, CH1,DC) Then FPDC on the 2nd post of the V stitch. Sk next DC * (60 sts) sl st in beg FPDC to end the round.
Round 8
Ch 1 and *FPDC in first FPDC. FPDC on next FPDC, DC in both DC’s of V stitch skipping the ch 1 of the V st. FPDC on next FPDC* (60 sts) sl st in beg FPDC to end the round.

Now we are going to repeat already established rows.
Round 9
Repeat round 6

Round 10
Repeat round 7
Round 11
Repeat round 8
Round 12
Repeat round 6
Round 13
Repeat round 7
Now we are at the brim. Time to change to your darker brim color. Place a marker to mark the beginning row if you need.

Round 14
Attach your new color to the beg st and ch 1. SC in same beg st. SC in all sts EXCEPT for the CH 1 spaces. At the end of this round you should have 60 sts. To end the round, I want you to sl st in the FLO of the beg SC.
Round 15
Remember doing the Crab Stitch (CS) you are going in reverse. So ch 1 and using the Front Loops Only (FLO) crab stitch in all your sc’s. You should have 60 stitches at the end of this row. Sl st in beg st.
Round 16
ch 2 and DC in all the Back Loops that you left from last round. (60 sts) sl st in beg ch 2.
Round 17
ch 2 and FPDC on beg ch 2. *BPDC on post of next DC, FPDC on post of next DC * repeat alternating BPDC and FPDC until you reach your last st. SL st in beg FPDC to end round.
Rounds 18 โ 22
ch 2 and FPDC on beg ch 2. BPDC on the BPDC’s and FPDC on the FPDC’s. You’ll always end with a sl st in the beg FPDC and chaining 2 before you start the next round.
That’s it! Hide your tails and enjoy!
