This V Stitch Slouch Hat came about because of a request to do a tutorial for one of Lion Brand’s patterns called “Falling Water shawl” which I did and you can find the links to that tutorial below.
While doing the tutorial I feel in love with the stitch pattern that was used at the end of the shawl! So much so that I created a Hat pattern to go along with their shawl and named it the Falling Water Slouch Hat.

For this Falling Water Slouch project you’ll need:
HOOK: 5 mm hook or size H hook for the US
YARN: Worsted weight yarn, 4 ply US, 10 ply AU
1 skein of Main color and less than a skein for rim of hat.
100 grams / 3.5. oz or 240 meters / 262 yards

And a tapestry needle
ABBREVIATIONS
ch = Chain
sl st = Slip Stitch
DC = Double Crochet
sk a st = Skip a stitch
FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet
beg = beginning
Repeat what’s in between * for rest of round.
V stitch 1 = DC 1, ch 1, DC 1
V stitch 2 = DC 2, ch 1, DC 2
This hat can be made in any size here are some recommendations on sizing this hat. Given how you crochet and size of yarn sizes could change.
The gauge for this hat is 11 sts for 4 inches or 10 cms.
Toddler – ch 48
Child to Teen – ch 56
Adult – ch 64
The size show in this pattern is size child to teen. But if you plan to make a larger or smaller size you can reduce or increase the amount of rows of each of the two sections by 1 to 2 rows as desired.

RIGHT HANDED VERSION

To start: WITH RIM COLOR
ch 56 and sl st to beg st to form a ring.
Round 1
ch 2, DC in all sts around, sl st in beg ch 2 (56 sts)
Round 2
ch 2, FPDC (onto ch 2 from previous round)
DC 1 in next 3 sts,
sk a st, V stitch (DC 1, ch 1, DC 1) sk a st, FPDC,
DC 1 in next 3 sts, FPDC * Repeat for round
To end round: The last 3 stitches of round should be V st 1, sk a st then sl st into top of first FPDC of round.
Round 3
It’s a Repeat round 2 but you’ll be V stitching in center of last V sts from last round
ch 2, *FPDC onto FPDC,
DC 1 in next 3 sts,
FPDC onto FPDC,
V stitch into the V st from last round * Repeat for round
To end round: The last 3 stitches of round should be V st 1, sk a st then sl st into top of first FPDC of round.
CHANGE COLOR TO MAIN COLOR (optional)
Round 4 – 10 ( 7 rounds )
Repeat round 3
Round 11 –
NOTE the V sts this round change to ( DC 2, ch 1, DC 2 )
ch 2, *FPDC onto FPDC,
skip next DC and V stitch into the middle DC, skip last DC* Repeat for round
To end round: sl st into the beg FPDC
Rounds 12 – 17 ( 6 rounds )
ch 2, *FPDC onto FPDC,
V stitch in center of last V st ( DC 2, ch 1, DC 2 )* Repeat for round
To end round: sl st into the beg FPDC
After round 17 ch 1 and leaving a long tail to use for sewing up the end of you hat, cut your yarn.
Turn your hat inside out and thread your tapestry needle. Weaving in and out through the stitches to create a draw string pull your hat closed.
Then sew up the hole going through the opposite side a few times.
Make sure hole is closed and tie a few knots. Hit ends.
