Popcorn Crochet Stitch – Row and Round – Free Crochet Pattern

This Popcorn Stitch can be done using any size yarn and hook. Works better with thinner yarn rather than thick though. I did this one in the picture with regular worsted weight yarn / 4 ply and a H hook or 10 ply and a 5 mm for AU
This stitch is done using 2 stitches, plus 1 when you’re ready to begin.
ABBREVIATIONS
ch = Chain
sl st = Slip Stitch
st = Stitch
SC = Single Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
sk a st = skip a stitch
To Make an Afghan see here for sizing http://craftingwithstyle.blogspot.co.il/2008/03/afghan-blanket-sizes.html loosely chain until you have desired size, count stitches to make sure it’s an even number, then add one stitch and follow basic scarf pattern below for working this stitch in rows.
The multiples of this stitch is 2 + 2 so get it as wide as you want then a 2 more and begin.

WORKING THE POPCORN STITCH IN THE ROUND
To Start:
ch 22
Row 1
sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in all sts ( 21 sts)
Row 2
ch 3 and turn, dc in first stitch, * sk a st, dc 5 into next stitch, turn your work around to the back and sl st into the first DC of the 5 DC’s you just made. Ch 2 * and repeat for row. Dc into last stitch. Ch 1 and turn
Row 3
Sc into all spaces, see picture below for help with placement
the ch 2 spaces and tops of puff stitches.
When you come up to your last DC, just sc into the ch 2 space before it and skip the dc and sc right into the top of the ch 3.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until desired length.
THE POPCORN STITCH – IN THE ROUND

Chain in sets of 2, sl st into beginning ch to form a ring.
Round 1
sc in all stitches around
Round 2
ch 3 and dc 4 into same beginning stitch. Turn work over, sl st into beginning ch 3 to create the popcorn stitch. * Ch 2 and skip a stitch, dc 5 into next stitch * and repeat for row.
Sl st in top of popcorn stitch to end the round.
Round 3
ch 3 and dc 4 into the top hole of the popcorn stitch. Turn work over and sl st into beginning ch to create popcorn stitch. Ch 2, work 5 dc’s into next hole made by the popcorn from the previous row.
Sl st in beginning hole of popcorn stitch and repeat round as much as needed.
