To Start:
Chain in sets of 6 until you have desired length then add 3 more chains.
Row 1 – The Set Up
Skip the first 6 chains and in the 7th chain *put 3 DC’s. Ch 3. Then back up, and working in the original skipped chains again, you will back up 2 chains and put 3 DC’s into the same ch space. Now working forward again, you skip one stitch, and in the next stitch put 1 DC. Skip 3 sts. Then repeat from * When you get to the end of the row you should have 1 DC in last stitch. Ch 3 and turn.
Row 2 – Bridging the Gap
DC 3 into beginning stitch. Sc into the chain 3 space at top of arch, Skip 6 sts and in the 7th stitch, which is the center double crochet, put 3 DC’s worked in the same stitch. Ch 3. Then find the center dc of the set of dc’s you skipped and put 3 dc’s into that center dc.
Sc into ch 3 space on arch. Repeat from * at end of row, DC 4 into the top of your beginning ch 3. Then ch 3 and turn. ( you will always ch 3 at the end of a row )
For this to make more since, let me show you what you will be looking for.
Each row has two sets of 3 double crochets with a chain three in between, which creates an arch.
And the stitches you will be using each round to “bridge the gap” are the center DC’s of each shell that makes up the arch.
Row 3
*Skip 6 sts, and in the 7th stitch, which should be the center DC of the shell, you put 3 DC’s. Ch 3. Then back up to the shell at the beginning of the row, ( the one from last row ) and put 3 dc’s in the center DC of the shell. Sc into ch 3 arch. Repeat from * end of row, DC 1 into top of beginning ch 3. Then Ch 3 and turn.
Rows 4 and on
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you reach desired size of project.
