Birds of a Feather Crochet Cowl – Free crochet pattern

I just love this Birds of a Feather stitch. With the Slouch hat’s pattern being refreshed I decided since I had more of the yarn, that I would make a cowl to go with it. This is all the same Variegated skein BTW!

To make your numbers come out correctly, you want to end with an even stitch 60, 80, 100 etc…and add a + 2 before you begin.

To Start: Using your Solid color

ch 100 + 2, sl st into beginning ch to form a ring. You should lose a chain when you join. Giving you 102 sts.

Round 1

ch 2 and DC in same st. DC the rest of your 101 sts of the round. sl st into the beginning DC to end the round.

Round 2

ch 2 and DC in same st. *Ch 2, sk 2 sts, DC in next st.* repeat for round.

To end round, only ch 1 instead of 2 and slip stitch into beginning DC.

Round 3 – This is when you switch to your variegated yarn.

Without cutting your yarn, just slip stitch your new color onto your loop and drop your solid color. You’ll only be crocheting with the Variegated color now.

Ch 1 and SC into the same stitch. Then Cross Stitch using the next 2 stitches (see special stitch instruction in abbreviations section above)

then SC into the next DC.

Repeat for round. Sl st into beg SC to end round. Rows 2 and 3 create what I call the Birds of a feather stitch. When making it in black as the solid color, it kinds reminds me more of hearts! What do you think?

Repeat rounds 2 and 3, four more times. Be sure to switch the colors every round without cutting your yarn as earlier instructed.

You should have 5 complete rows of the Birds of a Feather stitch now and are ready to switch back to your solid color for round 12.

We are going to be working on the center stripe that goes down the middle of this cowl.

Round 12 – Using Solid color

ch 2 and DC in same st. DC the rest of your 101 sts of the round. sl st into the beginning DC to end the round.

Round 13 – Switch to Variegated Color

sl st your variegated color up and ch 1 and BPDC on the DC on previous row. BPDC on all DC’s from the previous round. Sl st in beg BPDC to end round.

Round 14 – keep variegated yarn

Ch 2 and DC into beg st. DC in all sts around. Sl st in beg DC to end round.

Round 15 – Switch to Solid Color

ch 2 and BPDC on the DC on previous row. BPDC on all DC’s from the previous round. Sl st in beg BPDC to end round.

This will finish your stripe.

In Simple terms the stripe is:

DC Row (black), BPDC Row (Variegated color), DC Row (Variegated color), BPDC row (black)

Round 16 – Using Solid color still

Getting back to the Birds of a feather stitch.

ch 2 and DC in same st. *Ch 2, sk 2 sts, DC in next st.* repeat for round.

To end round, only ch 1 instead of 2 and slip stitch into beginning DC.

Round 17 – Switch to Variegated yarn

Ch 1 and SC into the same stitch. Then Cross Stitch then SC into the next DC.

Repeat for round. Sl st into beg SC to end round.

Again you want to have 5 sets of the Birds of a Feather stitch, so repeat Rounds 16 and 17, four more times. Just like we did before.

When you’re done with your that and you’re ready to do your ending round, switch back to your solid color for round 26.

Round 26 – With Solid color

Ch 2 and DC into beg st. DC in all sts around. Sl st in beg DC to finish your scarf. Cut your yarn leaving a bit of a tail to be worked in with a tapestry needle. Be sure to do this for both colors you used. Secure then with a knot.

Enjoy!
