I’m calling this stitch pattern Shells and Ladders Crochet Stitch for lack of a better name! I love the offset of the shell ladders as you work your way up, creating a really unique looking crochet piece. Easy 5 row repeat.

For this project you will need:
- HOOK: Any size but I used 5 mm hook or size H hook for the US
- YARN: Any size but I used worsted weight yarn, 4 ply US, 10 ply AU

ch = Chain
sl st = Slip Stitch
sk 2/ 3 sts = Skip two/ three stitches
SC = Single Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet
BPDC = Back Post Double Crochet
V Stitch = Dc 1, CH 1, DC1
* = Repeat what’s in between * for rest of round.

Row 1
DC in the 10th ch from the hook. Ch 1 and DC into the same st.
Ch 2, sk 3 sts and DC in the next st. * CH 2, sk 3 and DC into next. CH 1 and DC into same stitch. Ch 2, sk 3 and in DC into next stitch * Repeat what’s in between * for rest of the row. Ch 5 and turn
Row 2 (Start of repeat rows)
Skip first big space and working in the ch 1 sp of the V stitch, put a V stitch (Dc 1, ch 1, DC 1) * Ch 2 and do a FPDC onto the solo DC.
Ch 2 and V stitch into your V stitch * Repeat what’s in between * for rest of the row. Ch 4 and turn
Row 3
In the first V stitch of the row. Put 2 DC, ch 1, DC 2. * CH 1 and do a BPDC on the BPDC.
(Since we are coming from the back of the FPDC it’s now a BPDC)
Ch 1 and do the DC 2, ch 1, DC 2 into your V stitch. * Repeat what’s in between * for rest of the row.
When you come up to the final ch, you want to sk the first ch and DC into the next. This should leave you 3 unused chains. Ch 3 and turn

Row 4
*DC 7 into the V st. FPDC on the FPDC. * Repeat what’s in between * for rest of the row
When you come up to the final ch, you want to sk the first ch and DC into the next. This should leave you 3 unused chains. Ch 3 and turn
Row 5
DC into the same st as the beginning ch 3. * Ch 2 and DC in the 4th DC of your shell (which is the middle DC of the 7) Ch 2, DC into the stitch of the BPDC, ch 1 and DC again into the same st. This will create our V stitch. * Repeat what’s in between * for rest of the row
To end row, no need to skip a ch this time, just DC twice into the top of the ending ch st. CH 3 and turn.
Row 6
DC into the same st as the beginning ch 3. * Ch 2 FPDC onto the DC. Ch 2 and V stitch into your V stitch (DC 1, Ch 1, DC 1) * Repeat what’s in between * for rest of the row
DC twice into the top of the ending ch st. CH 3 and turn.
Row 7
DC 2 into the first DC of the row. * Ch 1 and BPDC on the BPDC. Ch 1 then DC 2, ch 1, DC 2 into the V stitch *
Repeat what’s in between * for rest of the row
DC three times into the top of your ending ch 3. CH 3 and turn.
Row 8
DC 3 into the first DC of row. * FPDC onto the FPDC. DC 7 into the ch 1 space of your V stitch. *
Repeat what’s in between * for rest of the row
DC four times into the top of your ending ch 3. CH 5 and turn.
Row 9 (Last row of Repeat) * V stitch (Dc 1, ch 1, DC 1) in the stitch of the BPDC. Ch 2 and Skip 3 DC’s and put a DC in the 4th DC of your shell (middle DC of shell) Ch 2 *
Repeat what’s in between * for rest of the row
DC into the top of your ending ch 3. CH 5 and turn.
Repeat rows 2 – 9
