This Crochet Slouchy Beret was designed to be a version of a Slouchy Beanie. The bottom is flat like a beret but wears like a slouchy beanie. I hope you like this design if you do please let me know and I will design more hats like this.

For this project you will need:
- HOOKS: a 5.5 mm hook and also a 5 mm hook if your head seems to lean to the small side, or your a teenager.
- YARN: Thick worsted weight doesn’t look so good on this, you need a more calm yarn, a thinner acrylic worsted weight 4 ply US / 10 ply AU, or a 3 ply US / 8 ply AU yarn that’s not to thin. Nothing to bulky. You will need two Skeins.

To Start – grab your 5.5 mm hook
ch 3, sl st to form a ring
Round 1
ch 1 and dc 12 into ring, sl st to beginning dc
Rounds 2 – 5 ( 4 rounds)
ch 1 and start doing your double crochet crossover stitch in same stitch and on. sl st to beginning st
Round 6
ch 1 and dc in same stitch, skip two stitches and bpdc, skip two stitches and fpdc, repeat for round. sl st to beginning st
Rounds 7 – 9 (3 rounds)
ch 1 and repeat your double crochet crossover stitches (dccs’s) sl st to beginning st
Round 10
ch 1 and dc in same stitch, skip two stitches and bpdc, skip two stitches and fpdc, repeat for round. sl st to beginning st
Round 11
ch 1 and dc into same stitch, bpdc on next dc post, then fpdc onto next post, repeat for whole round. sl st to beginning st
Round 12
Now it’s time to count your stitches. Next round you will need to have a total of 40 stitches so we need to know how much to decrease this round. I counted mine and I have 169 sts. So if we did as before and skipped 2 and DC into third then I would do 169 Divided by 3 equals 56 (we divide by 3 because you are crocheting in every 3rd stitch and skipping 2) which is what I need. But if you have more than 56 then you will want to skip a few more stitches.
So say you have more like 175 then divide by 3 = 58
Then you will be crocheting in every 3rd stitch but
you would need to skip 4 sts 2 times in this round to give you the 56 you need.
If you have it in the middle say 144 sts, 144 divide by 2 = 72 so you will need to skip 3 sts 12 times to get the 56 you need.
Say you have less 120 sts
120 / 3 = 40 then only skip 2
120 / 2 = 60 which is closer to 56,
Then you will be crocheting in every 2nd stitch but
just make sure to skip 3 sts 4 times in this round to give you the 56 you need.
Rounds 13 – 40
For 27 rounds or until the back of your hat falls the way you like and doesn’t stick up
I changed to a 5mm hook here because I have a smaller head and I want it to be tight, if you tend to have a bigger head, stay with your 5.5mm hook. Either way it should be snug, because the hat will loosen some after worn a little.
You will now be working the Thick Crochet Mesh:
ch 1 and dc one row down, then working in the right stitch of the beginning DC from last row, put a DC, then continue to the left as normal, repeat for whole round. sl st to beginning st. After the first round, there will be no need to ch 1 after you sl st in the beginning stitch, just dc two rows down and continue as normal (56 sts)
Round 41
If you were using a 5mm hook, switch to 5.5mm hook for this round. And if you were using a 5.5mm hook to this point and your hat is loose instead of snug on you, then you many want to switch to 5.mm hook for this round
ch 1 and SC in same stitch, Working in the right stitch of the DC’s from last row, put a SC, repeat for who round. sl st to beginning st (56 sts)
MAKING THE RIM
if you were using 5.5mm, then go down to you 5mm hook here
Rounds 42 – 47
Keep in mind the hat should be tight and snug, it will loosen as you wear it.
If your hat is has come out way to tight, then go up one hook size if it’s to big then go down one hook size.
